First Saturday

The Stargazers kit · ages 7–15

The Backyard Observatory

Up past bedtime, on purpose, with coordinates.

A telescope is the most-returned gift in the hobby world, because most first nights end in fog, frustration, and a tripod in a closet. This kit is built backwards from a guaranteed first target — the Moon’s terminator line — with gear chosen so that setup takes ten minutes and nobody consults a manual in the dark.

The Field Guide — your first three Saturdays

Written for the dad, not the kid. Including what to say when it goes sideways.

Session 01 · ~90 min

First Light: The Terminator Line

Assemble the scope in daylight, brief the mission, and hit the Moon’s terminator after dark.

Session 02 · ~90 min

The Planet Run

Use the planisphere to plan and execute your first real hunt: Saturn or Jupiter, by coordinates, kid navigating.

Session 03 · ~120 min

Host Night

Your kid runs the scope for an audience — mom, grandma, the neighbor kid. Teaching it is owning it.

Fair questions

We live near a city — is there any point?
Yes. The Moon, Saturn, and Jupiter punch straight through light pollution — they’re bright. City skies rule out faint galaxies, not the first year of this hobby.
Why not a “better” telescope for more money?
Aperture you’ll actually carry outside beats aperture in a closet. The FirstScope sets up in one minute, which for a 9-year-old’s attention span is the most important spec there is.
What if it’s cloudy on our first Saturday?
Session one is written with an indoor first half (scope assembly + Moon map briefing) precisely so a cloudy night still counts. The sky can reschedule; the ritual shouldn’t.
